Paul Calaminus is to be Chief Executive of East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT).

He has been interim Chief Executive since Dr Navina Evans left in October last year to become chief executive of Health Education England.

The Trust’s Council of Governors approved the appointment by our Non-Executive Directors at their meeting on Thursday evening (11 March 2021).

Paul originally joined the Trust in March 2017 as Chief Operating Officer and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in December 2019.

ELFT chair Mark Lam said: ‘Filling Navina’s boots was always going to be a challenge, but in Paul we’ve got someone who’s up for that challenge and has the ability to take this Trust which has twice been rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission,  from strength to strength.

‘Most of his time as interim Chief Executive has been managing the effects Covid has had on the Trust and he has done this in a calm, reassuring way which has further increased the respect he has among colleagues, staff and partner organisations.

‘Leading the Trust in a post-Covid world; working with the new Integrated Care Systems (ICS) in both north east London and Luton and Bedfordshire; and leading ELFT through the reforms promised in the latest Health White Paper will be Paul’s major challenges going forward. The Trust Board, which made the appointment, believes Paul has exactly the right skills to meet those challenges.’

Paul said: ‘I am honoured and humbled to be taking on this role. I am privileged to have the support of an excellent team and staff around me and together we can continue to build on the excellent work carried out over the last decade which has made the Trust what it is today.’

He added: ‘ELFT is known for its improvement work and for listening and involving service users in the planning of their care and I intend to make sure that continues going forward.’

Paul joined the NHS management training scheme in 1995 and has worked as a Service Director at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and then as Chief Operating Officer at Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust.

Paul, who is married with a son and daughter, is a keen rugby player and skier.
