ELFT has worked in partnership with Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) to develop an interim eight-bed mental health inpatient unit for Children and Young People in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes – Evergreen, which opened in February 2023.

Our location
Evergreen Unit is located on the First Floor of Calnwood Court, Luton, and provides specialist, short-term care for young people aged 12-17 who are experiencing complex mental health difficulties that cannot be managed safely in the community.

The long-term plan is to develop a permanent CAMHS unit as part of the modernising inpatient mental health programme.

Evergreen is based on the first floor of Calnwood Court, Luton, close to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital which is Located next to the M1 Motorway (Junction 11) between Luton and Dunstable.

Arriving by train
The nearest train station is Leagrave which is approximately 1.5 miles from the hospital and is served by Thameslink. Luton’s main train station is approximately four miles away in Luton Town Centre. 

Parking
There is paid parking available around the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and some limited paid street parking opposite the unit.

It is not possible to self-refer into Evergreen. Referrals are accepted via community CAMHs Teams and Crisis teams.

A quiet room at Evergreen for service users

We have a comprehensive multidisciplinary team within the service that consists of Psychiatrists, Nurses, Support Workers, Life Skills Recovery Workers, Psychologists, Family Therapists, Drama Therapists, Social Workers, Pharmacist, Occupational Therapists, Teachers and a Housekeeping Team.

We are a community-orientated unit. Evergreen works in close partnership with young people, their parents or carers, community CAMHS services, education, children’s services and other agencies, from pre-admission through treatment to transition and discharge planning.

Evergreen was designed and developed alongside young people with lived experience of inpatient mental health care. 

We continue to have strong links with our people participation team and welcome feedback from service users, parents and carers about how we can improve our service.

Mind BLMK

Mind BLMK offers a range of services for young people aged 14 – 30 years old across Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes. Their trained youth mental health workers provide resources, tools, information and advice to support positive mental health, wellbeing, and strengthening resilience.

Tokko

Tokko is a dynamic charity based in Luton town centre which supports young people aged 13-19 (up to 24 with SEN or a disability) to advance in life, feel safe and bring a reality to their imaginative ideas. Our projects support some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

The Step Down Service

The Step Down Service supports young people either at risk of admission or during the discharge process from Mental Health Inpatient Units. The service is designed to give young people a safe space to access emotional wellbeing support, gain coping & life skills and techniques to help them to avoid feeling in crisis.
