It’s a real privilege to be marking National AMHP Day today – a role which is absolutely vital to the healthcare system. Approved mental health professionals support colleagues by helping them to understand and use the Mental Health Act, engage with service users about consideration of its use and coordinate complex logistics across the NHS and partner agencies.
The decision to make applications for someone to be detained for assessment is never taken lightly. As AMHPs, we apply this complex space by ensuring that human rights remain fully understood and respected, while also using our judgement to apply the Act.
I initially trained to be an approved social worker 22 years ago, and I converted to an AMHP in 2007. I have undertaken some of the most challenging and difficult assessments across all age groups – seeking to ensure decisions are the correct one.
I am extremely proud of all AMHPs practicing across the Trust, and wish them all of the best as they continue to navigate this difficult yet rewarding role.
Thank you to you all.
