Our team in Tower Hamlets were delighted to welcome Tower Hamlets Councillor Gulam Kibria Choudhury to Burdett House in Mile End Hospital for the grand opening of a new purpose-built perinatal service office space.
The Councillor was given a tour of the site – which was only moved into by staff in November – before hearing from service staff about the logistics of the site move and the work of the perinatal team in Tower Hamlets.
After the presentations took place, the Councillor cut the ribbon to officially open the new office perinatal service.
The team comprises of specialist mental health professionals, psychiatrists, specialist nurses, psychologists, nursery nurses, occupational therapists and administrators. They all work closely with midwives, obstetricians, health visitors and other health professionals who may be in the families’ network.
The overall aim of the service is to identify and treat antenatal and postnatal mental health and attachment difficulties, so that parental wellbeing can be maintained. The site, which sees women and their partners, offers the below services:
- Advice for planned pregnancies, particularly how to manage treatment regimens.
- Support for those struggling with bonding and attachment, and experiencing emotional difficulties affecting parents’ enjoyment of their new relationship with their child.
- Assessments and care planning for pregnant women and those who have recently given birth and have/had mental health issues.
The service offers a wide range of therapeutic psychological interventions including couples therapy.
Speaking about the visit, Parveen Bhatia, the Operational Lead of the Tower Hamlets Perinatal Team, said: “I’m really pleased that Mr Choudhury was able to visit our new building. A lot of hard work has taken place behind the scenes to ensure today was possible, and we’re incredibly proud of everybody.
“Thank you to Mr Choudhury for visiting, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future.”
