ELFT is one of five recipients of funding from the Elsie Wagg Scholarship.
The scholarship is offered in conjunction with the Queen’s Nursing Institute and the National Garden Scheme for nurse-led projects that promote the health benefits of gardening and garden visiting among a group of people in the community. Scholarships are awarded to only five nurses each year.
Health Equalities Service Clinical Nurse Manager Simone Mingay has been awarded the £5,000 funding to make greater use of the outside space at Twinwoods in Bedfordshire. The Health Equalities Service sits in the Specialist Services for People with a Learning Disability.
The project aims to create an accessible outside garden area that can be used as part of therapy sessions in an innovative way. In the long term, the team hope that the space can also be used as part of parent/carer drop in sessions as well as part of the service’s new weight management programme.
The project will take place over the next 12 months.
Simone said: “Our next steps will be to gather a core group of volunteers, including staff, service users and carers who can help shape and develop the garden space and bring it to life.”
