The Awards, which were held in a packed ceremony at the membership body’s headquarters at 21 Prescot Street in London, acknowledged and celebrated the contributions of psychiatrists in the mental health sphere throughout London in the past year.
Dr James Cai was nominated by Dr Ian Hall and Dr Laura Checkley, consultant psychiatrists at the Hackney Integrated Learning Disability Service. This was for the ‘Foundation Doctor of the Year’ category due to Dr Cai’s proactivity in supporting QI colleagues with their Right Support, Right Time project. He successfully used data analysis to help evaluate several changes to improve the experience of service users. He presented the work internally at team meetings and also at national conferences.
The Award was also given for Dr Cai’s thorough understanding of patient care and complex mental health disorders, as well as his clear and concise explanations of these to colleagues and patients.
It was also noted that Dr Cai regularly took it upon himself to develop his knowledge further by reading about clinically-relevant topics to benefit his own decision-making and the care of service users.
The role that Dr Cai played in his four-month placement still resonates with carers and service users to this day, who regularly share their positive experiences of the impact he had on their day-to-day lives.
A huge congratulations to Dr Cai on his recent win, and best of luck to him for his future career in medicine!
