Stepney and Wapping Neighbourhood Mental Health Team member Robin Wills and his wife Gita, 67, recently completed the trek and decided to raise sponsorship for the Spitafields Crypt Trust (SCT) in East London in the process.
The Trust supports people with drug and alcohol problems and homelessness.
The couple climbed within a few kilometres of Kilimanjaro base camp despite challenging weather and experiencing altitude exhaustion.
Robin has worked for the Trust for more than 20 years.
“The trip was fantastic,” said the 72-year-old.
“But I think we found the weather, altitude and speed of the group, who were trying to reach the summit in four days, all very challenging.”
Robin has vowed to return next year, planning to do a six-day trek, with a day of rest in between.
The four-day trek they did this year was an incredible attempt on one of the most challenging routes to the mountain summit.
Congratulations to Robin and Gita!
