Sue Inskip works part-time with the PLS team at Bedford Hospital as a Senior Liaison Nurse, specialising in care of older people with mental illness.
The 62-year-old (pictured while working at Fountains Court) started her career as a Cadet Nurse at Bedford Hospital in 1977. She has also worked as a Staff Nurse, Community Psychiatric Nurse, Sister and Matron.
Sue has worked at services including Weller Wing and Fountains Court in Bedford.
She took her NHS pension at the age of 57 and was then able to get a part-time job for the PLS at Bedford Hospital in 2017 – back where her career started.
“I love working part time,” said Sue.
“The flexibility is great, the work is manageable, interesting and I hope to continue for at least a few more years!”
She added: “We are fortunate in the NHS to have lots of part-time opportunities, and it is great to be able to prepare yourself for retirement by going part time at the end of your career.”
Sue is encouraging other experienced colleagues to consider the benefits of phasing towards retirement.
“I love this new role,,” she said.
“Although specialising in older people I have had the opportunity to work with younger adults, and those suffering with eating disorders, drug and alcohol dependence, and personality disorders. I have gained lots of new knowledge and love the fact that every shift is different.
“It is a great feeling when you have been able to listen and support someone and they have left, feeling better than they did when they arrived.”
Bedford PLS Operational Lead Edwin O’Selmo said: “Sue has the experience that comes from nearly five decades of working for the NHS and the enthusiasm of someone fresh from college. She is incredible.
“We are a better team with Sue and would hope that other experienced staff consider the value they can bring through different roles before retirement.”
