Organised by the East London NHS Foundation Trust’s Health E1, the Christmas event at 9-11 Brick Lane E1 6PU was transformed into a vibrant hub of health and happiness. The practice warmly welcomed individuals experiencing homelessness for a Winter Fair, offering warmth, care, and festive cheer.
One hundred sixty attendees enjoyed a range of essential services and festive treats, including hot meals, long-life food supplies, toiletries, winter clothing, free haircuts, flu vaccinations, health checks and more.
The event was a testament to community spirit, providing respite and support to those in need in Tower Hamlets.
Dr. Mohit Venkataram, ELFT Executive Lead for Primary Care, was thrilled with the event's success, stating, "The leadership of our communities in supporting the vulnerable homeless during Christmas is truly heartwarming. Events like these not only offer critical services but also bring joy and hope to those facing tough times. Christmas is about bringing cheer and festivity irrespective of social circumstances. The Health E1 team exemplified that beautifully with the communities for our homeless clients. I am grateful to work with such fabulous colleagues"
Service users expressed their appreciation for the fair.
Ivone, a service user at Health E1, shared her experience: "Being here at Health E1 has helped me immensely through everything I've been going through. I'm so glad to be here, receiving support in every aspect. I'm truly grateful for Health E1 and the NHS. Health E1 has created something truly beneficial for the local community."
Shakhawat, a long-time service user, expressed his appreciation: "I've been a patient here for a long time, and everyone has been incredibly helpful. The community support at Health E1 is great. Today, I was invited to attend the fair, which provided me with a wonderful opportunity to showcase my artwork. They gave me the space to display my paintings, and I received numerous compliments and kind words. This service is truly wonderful and has made a significant difference."
Anhu, a service user, shared his gratitude: "Health E1 has been a great help to me, providing treatments, housing assistance, and council support to ensure I stay safe and warm, especially during the cold, snowy days. I'm truly grateful for the warm meal, jumper, toiletries, and additional food they provided me. Their support has been invaluable."
Ms. Barham, Chief Executive of Local Voice, explained the purpose of their outreach: "The main reason we're here today, engaging with the homeless, is to understand what truly matters in their lives, taking a broader perspective on health and wellbeing. We're asking for their feedback on their deepest wishes, dreams, and the barriers they face in achieving these. All responses are compiled into a data set accessible to professionals across housing and social services, enabling them to enhance the services they provide."
The event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Health E1's multi-agency partnership group, involving various health, care, and housing providers across Tower Hamlets. ELFT staff, including the corporate secretariat team, also played a significant role, contributing donations and support.
Health E1 Practice in Tower Hamlets remains committed to providing all-encompassing care to the community's most vulnerable, including those in hostels, rough sleepers, and the hidden homeless.
The Christmas Fair 2023 is a shining example of Health E1's ongoing commitment to and care for the community.
