Dr Nick Hawkes, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead for ELFT’s Bedfordshire and Luton Adult Community Eating Disorder Service, hopes as many professionals as possible will undertake the Beyond the Symptoms training provided by Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity.
The training is for any health professional not specialising in eating disorder treatment who may encounter patients with a suspected eating disorder.
The session will cover:
- Common challenges experienced by primary care staff identifying and treating people with eating disorders
- Three major eating disorders: spotting the early warning signs, risk management and screening tools
- The importance of early intervention
‘Eating disorders are presenting increasingly frequently and people need the whole system to be able to help, but when it’s not your specialism you can feel unsure in your approach,” said Dr Hawkes.
“Beyond the Symptoms’, a brief and high quality training from Beat, is designed to be just what you need.”
“Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, and anyone of any age, gender, ethnicity or background can develop one,” said Beat.
“Recognising the illness early saves lives. If you can spot an eating disorder and refer a patient into treatment as quickly as possible, they have a better chance of making a full recovery.”
The training runs from 9.30am-1.30pm and available dates include Feb 7, Feb 14, March 1, March 8, March 21, March 28, April 4 and April 11.
