Epilepsy Training available for school staff in Newham
Training is available to all school staff within education and early year’s settings. Training session aims to support staff in providing a safe environment for children and young people with Epilepsy.
Tier 1 - Epilepsy Awareness Training
Tier 1 session covers:
- What is epilepsy
- Cause of epilepsy
- Different seizure types
- How to make someone safe during different types of seizures
- What is an emergency?
- Epilepsy treatments
- Awareness of the psychological impacts

Epilepsy Training Tier 2 - Practical Emergency Medication Training
This practical session will teach staff about safe use of rescue medication and how to administer this. The course will be made up of presentations, videos, practical demonstrations and hands on learning. At the end of the course you will need to pass an assessment of learning. this is made up of theory questions and practical skills. Once passed you will able to administer emergency medication. Please ensure you have read your child's care plan and are aware of their medication before attending.
Course Requirements:
- Must have a child currently attending school/nursery with epilepsy with Buccal midazolam prescribed
- Have attended practical training within the last 18 months - please bring your certificate as evidence
- Have attend the online awareness session within the last 8 weeks if you have not completed practical training before or it has lapsed.
All practical sessions will take place at: Appleby Health Centre, 63 Appleby Road, Canning Town, E16 1LQ

Please only attend this course if you have a child with rescue medication prescribed in your setting. Not all children with epilepsy have rescue medication. Delegates must have completed Tier 1 Epilepsy awareness to attend.
