Ventilation and Tracheostomies
Ventilation and Tracheostomy
If a child has a tracheostomy or requires Non-invasive ventilation they will usually have a carer/nurse allocated to meet their health needs. Agency workers will accompany the child to school to ensure they do not miss out on vital education.
SSNT can provide awareness training on NIV and traceostomies. We will complete competency training on oxygen equipment to ensure teaching assistants are equipped to support the carer/nurse in an emergency situation. See our oxygen page for more information about oxygen in schools.
This care delivery aspect will need to be included on the child’s school care plan. The SSNT will hold a meeting with family and school to review and sign the school care plan which needs to be in place before a child can commence school. The care plan is reviewed annually or as soon as there is a change in care delivery needs.
