Upcoming Training Available for Professionals

Use of the Naso-gastric tube for feeding and medication administration- Theory and Practical (2 hrs face to face):

This is for staff working in schools with children and young people who have a Naso-gastric tube device, who are new to feeding or have less than 2 years active feeding experience*.

Training is face-to-face at Joyce Cambell Clinic, 478 Barking Road, London E6 2LT and will include theory and practical with training equipment.

*Active experience: feeding children and young people on a regular basis consistently.

On successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to feed a child or young person via naso-gastric tube device in the school/nursery setting. The learner will be able to feed via pump/gravity/bolus feeding and administer medication safely via this route.

Assessments by special school nursing team will take place locally within schools, after staff attend the training.

Course Requirements:

• Must have a child currently attending school/nursery with a naso-gastric feeding tube who requires a feed/water/medication during school/nursery hours.
• Must complete the enteral feeding workbook and achieve the practical competency to achieve certification.
• Must receive refresher training every 18 months.

A refresher session for staff who have over two years experience with an Enteral Feeding Device (Tube Feeding)

This session takes place online and is a 2 hour session from 10am-12pm.  

This is for staff working in schools with children and young people who have enteral feeding. Staff must have minimum 2yrs plus active experience* to attend the refresher training.

Refresher training will not be a detailed training so staff new to enteral feeding must not attend this session. Evidence of active training for 2yrs+ must be provided at the session (evidence of competencies and workbooks completed in the past).

*Active experience: feeding children and young people on a regular basis consistently.

Assessments by special school nursing team will take place locally within schools, after staff attend the training.

This training should be completed every 18 months after completing the face to face new staff training.

Emergency enteral feeding training only

Some children/young people may have an enteral feeding device which is not being used during school hours. School staff must be trained to deal with an emergency and be aware of the process to follow if the device is accidentally removed. You do not need to attend full enteral feeding training if you are not administering feeds/medication/water in school.
