Willow Ward - Bedfordshire

Willow Ward is an 11-bed ward providing treatment and care to female service users.

It forms part of Oakley Court which is an acute inpatient psychiatric unit, providing care to working-age female adults from Bedfordshire.

Oakley Court houses two inpatient facilities, Ash (male) and Willow (female) wards, which are 19 and 11 bedded wards, respectively.

Oakley Court is part of a wide range of services available for people who require inpatient support and care for their mental health problems. The service aims to provide short and focused admissions in a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week supportive and safe environment.

It also strives to establish, develop and maintain effective working relationships with external organisations, stakeholders, statutory and non-statutory agencies, which are there to support the patients on their journey to recovery.

As an inpatient care provider, the service focuses on the needs of the individual and provides care that is individualised and promotes recovery and inclusion.

Patients are unable to self-refer into this service. Referrals for admissions are managed via the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team for Bedford.

All inpatients have a thorough assessment of their care needs and associated risks. This leads to the development of a comprehensive, personalised treatment plan, leading to a tailored therapeutic approach focusing on specific needs and issues.

As well as stabilising symptoms of mental illness, patients can access occupational therapies, psychological interventions  and a range of other clinical services including regimes of therapeutic medication and the delivery of enhanced physical health care packages.

Each patient’s progress is managed by the clinical team utilising the Care Programme Approach which is based on a Recovery Model.

The unit benefits from a multidisciplinary approach to care, which includes input from the consultant psychiatrists, the staff grade and junior doctors, the modern matron and the clinical ward managers, mental health staff nurses and clinical practice leads, clinical support and recovery workers, as well as occupational therapists and instructors.

In addition, the service also includes external visiting professionals such as housing officers, social workers and drug and alcohol workers.
